Dear Amy,
Welcome to the Volunteer News Flash e-newsletter! We hope to connect you with the latest volunteer opportunities at the Center for Child Protection, recognize the people who support us, and provide you with helpful information. I'll be sending the News Flash out bi-monthly to keep you up to date on what's going on at the Center! Again, thank you for your commitment and service on behalf of the children we serve. Happy reading! |
| Welcome Home to the Kozmetsky Center for Child Protection |
In late May, the Center will move to our new location, the Kozmetsky Center for Child Protection. Our new 30,000 square foot facility will allow us to provide expanded services to more Travis County children and families.
Close your eyes and picture this, a large children's play area complete with a new playhouse, computer room and book nook. A sparkling volunteer workroom with a wall of windows, enabling volunteers to look out at the children while they play. A Kid's Kitchen, with a refrigerator, located in the children's area for easily accessible snacks and juices. A 10,000 square foot training facility for on-going enrichment activities. All services for children and families will be located on the second floor to ensure that services are not disrupted.
Keep a lookout for an invite to our Volunteer House Warming and tour of the new facility! Want a sneak peek of the Kozmetsky Center's location? Click here for some recent pictures and click here for a map to the new location. |
| Volunteer Spotlight: Mary Kahle |
Some days at the Center are busier than others. But regardless of the client flow, volunteer and Guild member Mary Kahle is guaranteed to be working hard.
After reading in the newspaper about a horrific child abuse case last Spring, Mary decided she was tired of feeling powerless and wanted to be proactive in helping child victims of abuse. She began research on-line and came across the Center for Child Protection's Friends of Christopher Guild. She joined the Guild in March of 2007, then decided that she also wanted to work directly with our children. In December of 2007, she became a Child and Family Specialist, interacting with children at the Center while her own three children were studying hard at school. Staff, volunteers, and clients alike look forward to seeing Mary who is always eager to lend a helping hand. Depending on the day, you might find her coloring with a child, deep cleaning the playhouse, or even scanning documents. Soon, she will be busy planning as she has taken on the exciting role of chair of our fabulous PlayBingo Shopping Extravaganza! Thank you, Mary, for your dedication and commitment to the Center for Child Protection and the children we serve! |

With the help of our volunteers, the Guardian Angel Society Reception was an evening to remember. Thank you so much, guys! Our first Center Volunteer Social in March was a huge success as well! Thank you so much to all of the staff and volunteers who enjoyed the beautiful weather with us on the Central Market Cafe patio! Didn't make it to the social? Not to worry-we have another one planned for September! This is what's coming up over the next two months:
- Kozmetsky Center Volunteer House Warming-Join us at the Kozmetsky Center for a Volunteer House Warming. Take a look at at the grounds, get a tour of the new facility, and mingle with fellow Center volunteers. The date is still unknown, but look for an Evite coming soon!
- Volunteer Orientation-A monthly Volunteer Orientation will be a part of our newly revised Volunteer Training. Created for people who are unfamiliar with the Center, but interested in volunteering, this Orientation will describe the Center for Child Protection and explain the vital role of volunteers. Our first orientation will be held Monday, June 9th from 6-7 pm. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP by emailing me at srichards@centerforchildprotection.org.

We are busily assessing what our volunteer needs will be at the new Kozmetsky Center. I'll be sure to let you know what is available as these opportunities become available. We will also be changing up the current roles to address the changing needs of the new Center. If you are a Child and Family Specialist or a Sibcare provider, I will be contacting you to discuss what changes to expect.
Project Graduation- Every year, the Center puts together and distributes "life kits" for youth aging out of the foster care system. These kits contain the essentials teens need as they begin that new stage in life. Items include a comforter, iron, pots and pans, towels and much more. We need volunteers to help us shop for items the week of May 5th and help organize the kits beginning Friday, May 9th and continuing on May 12th and 13th. Just send me an email if you would like to help and I'll give you some details!
NFL Alumni Golf Classic & Caring for Kids Banquet-Come out Thursday, June 19th to the TDS Exotic Game Ranch and volunteer at our Caring for Kids banquet complete with silent and live auctions! Are you a sports fan? Then join us on Saturday, June 20th for our NFL Alumni Golf Classic at the fabulous Hills Country Club. We need volunteers to help set up in the early morning and experienced golfers to act as hole spotters and game scorers during the tournament. Email me at srichards@centerforchildprotection.org to volunteer! Learn more about the event by clicking here. | |
