Dear Amy,
We hope you, your family and friends have enjoyed
a restful, memorable summer together. If you're
looking to give back, consider volunteering at the
Center for Child Protection. An orientation and training
session is coming up next month (more details
below). And, as you consider your shopping plans for
the month, please encourage your friends to support
the Center by coming out for the The Domain PlayBingo
Shopping Extravaganza, August 25th. It's easy to
play, shop, and win 26 prizes worth more than
$500 each while benefitting children, like Myra, who
need our
help.

The Ultimate Betrayal: A Child's Story
|
|
It was ten-year-old Myra's statement that made the
words "sexual abuse" as real as it could ever get.
While Myra sat in a chair alongside a trained forensic
interviewer, she spoke in detail about the two years of
sexual acts that she had endured by her brother. "I just
want it to stop," she said. This little girl was not
fortunate enough to have a mother who would listen.
Once Myra told someone at school, a report was
made and Myra came to the Center to tell what
happened. Throughout the interview, Myra was
anxious when she spoke about the things that her
brother did to her; however, in the closing stages she
looked relieved that someone had finally heard her
story and that the sexual abuse would stop.
Although
Myra is no longer living with her mother, she is now in
a safe environment with loving caregivers. Through it
all, Myra is still working on the betrayal and profound
sadness she feels about her mother's unwillingness
to keep her safe. Not only has she lost her innocence
but also the family she's always known. Although Myra
will need time to manage the sadness and loss of
her family, now, in a safe environment, she has a
significantly better opportunity to escape the
devastating impact that undisclosed and untreated
sexual abuse causes. At the Center, we know that
safety for this little girl comes with loss of a family and
her familiar home. We know that she will need support
and all our help if she is to return to her childhood.
*Names and other identifying circumstances have
been changed to protect the privacy of children and
families.
