Each year, the Center for Child Protection sponsors a donation drive for "Life Kits" for teenagers who are aging out of foster care in Travis County. Once these teens turn 18, many of them must begin a new life for themselves without the benefit of support. To address this need, the Center is collecting basic household items—a "Life Kit" —to help these teens get started on the path to success. Items the Center is collecting include basic necessities including a clock radio, towels, sheets, pots and pans and more. Each Life Kit costs $150, and the Center estimates serving more 80 young adults in 2010.
Though contributions are collected for teenagers year round, spring high school graduation season is when the need for these life kits are greatest. If you would like to drop off donations or gift cards for the spring 2010 drive, please drop them off by April 30th, 2010. Please help us serve these teenagers by sponsoring a Life Kit for $150 and give them hope for a new beginning by making an online contribution today. We are also accepting gift cards to discount retailers.
We welcome volunteer assistance with shopping and assembling Life Kits so they are ready for delivery. Learn more by contacting Collin Cook at 512-472-1164 or ccook@centerforchildprotection.org. Download a one-page flier (PDF) to send to help us spread the word!

Angie*, benefited from this program a year ago. She told her case worker that she knew what it was like “not to have anything” and was so very grateful for the Life Kit she received. She is working at a local restaurant and is saving her money to purchase a car, so she can attend a technical school. *Angie is not her real name.
